Been injured by a tired driver?
Claim personal injury compensation today
Tens of thousands of people are hurt or killed on Britain's roads every year, many through no fault of their own.
Drink-driving, speeding and erratic driving all play their part in contributing to the high number of deaths on the road, but a massive proportion of car accidents are caused by people falling asleep at the wheel.
It is estimated that as many as 20% of vehicle accidents can be attributed to tiredness, resulting in serious personal injury, wrecked lives and devastated relatives. In addition to the obvious effects of such car accidents, personal injury compensation claims are a very real possibility.
In order to avoid becoming too sleepy when taking a long journey, the Department for Transport has issued the following advice:
- Have a good night's sleep before setting out on a long journey.
- Avoid making long trips between midnight-6am and 2-4pm when natural alertness is low.
- Take a 15 minute break after every two hours of driving.
- Drinking a couple of cups of coffee or another high caffeine drink and having a rest to allow the caffeine to kick is an effective method of combating sleepiness.
- If you do start to feel sleepy then find a safe place to stop as soon as possible.
- Share the driving if and when possible.
Despite the countless warnings given by the authorities and by road safety charities, people continue to drive while dangerously tired. Anybody who has suffered as the result of a road accident caused by someone falling asleep at the wheel is perfectly entitled to make an accident claim for personal injury compensation.
And it doesn't have to be the driver of another car. If you were a passenger and the person driving your car fell asleep, you would be well within your rights to make a personal injury compensation claim against them.
